J. Krishnamurti's words on the lines of concentrating on uncovering the Truth rather than finding and following someone else's established path...

"I maintain that truth is a pathless land, and you cannot approach it by any path whatsoever, by any religion, by any sect. That is my point of view, and I adhere to that absolutely and unconditionally. Truth, being limitless, unconditioned, unapproachable by any path whatsoever, cannot be organized; nor should any organization be formed to lead or coerce people along a particular path. ... This is no magnificent deed, because I do not want followers, and I mean this. The moment you follow someone you cease to follow Truth. I am not concerned whether you pay attention to what I say or not. I want to do a certain thing in the world and I am going to do it with unwavering concentration. I am concerning myself with only one essential thing: to set man free. I desire to free him from all cages, from all fears, and not to found religions, new sects, nor to establish new theories and new philosophies."

  1. This path is not a path which will bring happiness or joy. If one is seeking treasures of the mind, severe disappointment lies ahead. Pride will be shattered. Foundations will be overturned. Long held beliefs will be cast aside. Total devastation of the mind and self will happen. Relationships will collapse. Life as one lives it will overturn although the world is still the same.

A person who has never been through this path, except intellectually and logically, has no way of comprehending whats going to happen to him.

A hint: contemplate giving up only sugar for the rest of your life willingly. Intellectually it appears very simple. So do it. Just imagine how much trouble it is just giving up sugar or salt - never will he again experience the taste of sweets or other associated food EVER. Thats what's going to happen when the person gives up certain emotions and apsects of the brain. The struggle and the barriers of mind. New aspects of the mind will come, new truths will show up, but thats far in the future. Only a few will understand the person who goes through this path. Near and Dear ones will become far. Life will blow up as the person knows now.

If the path was easy, everyone would be a saint by now or would have got nirvana or moksha or whatever lies on the other side of the awakened mind.

    1. All thats going to happen is that he will be freed from the cycle of action / reaction, the prison of the opposites ( yin/yan). He will be in transcendental tranquillity as events flow by because he will "know" the transient nature of all that is around him.

Nothing will disturb him because he will achieve the ability to love everything there is - what we know as good and the bad in our current experiences, love all the opposites in life equally, love everything which is in existence. He will neither favour anyone nor disfavour anything, because all those are a part of his extended being - the Universe.

This is the cataclysmic change which he will achieve.

    3. @ ghanesh, The quality of what is the definition of the "unknown" or the "Oneness" or the "Truth" is not known to anyone living. That is only described by some in terms of metaphors as there is no word to describe it. It does not imply that there is a "treasure" of experiences lying hidden there. But to that "goal" our inner deeper urge propels man - towards the quest for the truth.

This journey is more perilous than anything known to man - more dangerous than the voyages of Columbus or Magellan or Neil Armstrong or into the jungles of the Amazon.

It only seems safe because man is delving into the layers of his mind, but once the journey goes on, there are many pitfalls which can lead the ego stray in subtle ways which can have profound side-effects on his development, Thats why we know of only a handful of great men like Buddha, Mahavira, Jesus etc who survived its gruel over lifetimes.

    4. Absolutely agreed. In fact many claim that one might not get to the end in one lifetime and of course the hardships will start as soon as one decides to walk on this path. It is indeed a big decision to decide to tread this path.
